Created in 2008 in response to the severe subprime financial crisis, the Institut Louis Bachelier (ILB) is a private partnership-based research network in economics and finance, bringing together academics, industry professionals, and public authorities. It is based in Paris in the former Palais Brongniart Stock Exchange.
It is a unique structure built on France’s excellence in applied mathematics for finance and economics. Its name, Louis Bachelier, refers to the French mathematician who, in 1900 under the supervision of Henri Poincaré, defended a revolutionary thesis entitled “Théorie de la spéculation.” Completely ignored for more than half a century, his work was rediscovered in the 1960s and became one of the mathematical foundations of modern financial markets.
ILB’s mission is to promote research and modelling in economics and finance to provide French economic actors with a decisive competitive advantage. Open cooperation is a key driver of innovation and lies at the heart of ILB’s activities. The ILB operates under the legal structure of a French non-profit association (Loi 1901), governed by a Board of Directors, and founded by two public-interest foundations: the Fondation du Risque (FDR) and the Fondation Institut Européen de Finance (EIF). These two foundations decided to pool their resources while maintaining their autonomy and their distinct, complementary missions—fundamental research for FDR and applied research for EIF.
As an operational research unit, ILB coordinates—synergistically with both foundations—a team of engineers (ILB Labs) and provides R&D advisory services in two fields: data science (DataLab) and ESG topics (ESG Lab).
ILB’s capacities are amplified by its network-based structure, with a central team of scientists and managers initiating projects, ensuring financial and administrative management, overseeing scientific follow-up, and contributing to the dissemination of results.
Now more than ever, collective intelligence is essential. Only a strong network can encourage the development of new ideas, support the implementation of projects, and accelerate their deployment. The Institut Louis Bachelier has thus developed an exclusive ecosystem: the expertise and excellence of French research in applied mathematics for finance and economics are supported by partners committed to building responsible economic models.
