n the era of the urban ecological transition, marked by ecological, environmental, societal, and social emergencies, it is essential to think holistically about the making of a recycled and resilient city, in order to bring together all stakeholders in the value chain by breaking down the barriers between the professional worlds of finance, property development, architecture and project management, operations, and use.
Launched in June 2023, the Chair in the Economics of the Urban Ecological Transition (Real Estate, Housing, Architecture, Urban Planning) aims to establish a platform for teaching and research that is academically recognized and open to the world of economic and political decision-making.
Economic questions arise: how can we meet the growing housing needs of households, develop real estate supply—residential, industrial, and tertiary (commercial zones, business districts)—while supporting the urban ecological transition? How can initiatives and projects with high ecological value be economically and financially recognized? How can the value chain be rethought, particularly the economic role of new entrants in the emerging real-estate sectors? How can we innovate and build differently at a time when land scarcity is becoming a major obstacle for developers? How can we promote density and the recycling of urban fabric while preserving the quality of living spaces?
The Chair aims to become a center of expertise on real-estate economics and the economics of the ecological transition, focused on the added value of professions and skills, enabling all actors in the economic value chain of urban and real-estate production (planning, financing, project ownership, project management, construction) to produce and build housing, office real estate, and commercial real estate—i.e., the urban districts of tomorrow—in a sustainable and decarbonized way.
The Chair has set as a priority the training of young talents and young researchers by hosting interns, PhD students, and postdoctoral researchers from diverse backgrounds. It is also a place for exchange between researchers and professionals interested in promoting the ecological transition of cities.
The Chair in the Economics of the Urban Ecological Transition (Real Estate, Housing, Architecture, Urban Planning) of Institut Louis Bachelier is launching its first conference, “Reinvesting in Resilient Real Estate,” on Wednesday, March 6, 2024, from 4:30 pm to 7:30 pm at the Collège de France.
