Reconciling French people with the economy — Mermoz publishes its 7th issue

La Revue du Cercle des Economists - #7 is the economy still useful?

The economy is omnipresent in public debate, but often perceived as abstract, remote, and even inaccessible. GDP growth, unemployment rate, public debt... these key indicators are not enough to reflect the concrete concerns of citizens. Result: a feeling of disconnection, confirmed by an exclusive investigation conducted by the Bona Fidé Institute for Mermoz, which reveals that 80% of French people estimate the poorly educated population about economic issues, despite a real interest in the subject.

It is in response to this observation that the 7th issue of Mermoz has set itself a strong mission: to show how the economy can help to understand and act in the face of the major challenges of our time.

26 new contributions, a common ambition

This new issue brings together 26 contributors from various backgrounds — researchers, economists, leaders, philosophers, policy makers — including Cédric Villani, François Villeroy de Galhau, Stefanie Stantcheva, Laurence Boone, Virginie Morgon, James K. Galbraith, Bernard Lahire, or Patrick Pouyanné. Together, they explore the relationships between economy and morality, science, governance, finance, poverty, artificial intelligence or even ecology.

A large amount of space is given to interviews, analyses and controversies, to shed light on the major debates taking place in the discipline today:

- Can the economy predict the future?

- Do we need to rethink models in the face of ecological limits?

- What are the new drivers of international cooperation?

- Can we still control the economy?

- What places for donations, bartering or experimentation in contemporary economic practices?

A look at global news

A special “Insights on the news” section completes this issue with analyses of Patrick Artus (deindustrialization in France), Pierre Sellal (European geopolitics) and Arancha Gonzalez (Latin America and international tensions).
