This signature opens a new sequence of a partnership initiated in 2018, and reaffirmed in 2021, between the Fondation du Risque, Le Mans University, via the IRA, and the Covéa group. The objective is to continue the work carried out by the research initiative “Emerging or atypical risks in insurance”, under the scientific responsibility of Alexandre Brouste, professor of mathematics at Le Mans University, and Anis Matoussi, director of the IRA.
François Féquent, Marketing, Communication and Innovation Director at MMA and member of the research initiative's steering committee, says: “This long-term partnership with the Risk & Insurance Institute and the Risk Foundation embodies the Covéa group's commitment to academic research as a lever for adapting to constantly evolving insurance risks.”
The emergence of certain risks and their atypical nature force insurers to quickly adapt their actuarial techniques to take into account changes in society and insurable matters, but also in case law and law. This is in order to always be as close as possible to the needs of insured customers.
In this sense, the research initiative led by the IRA aims to advance research on the assessment of emerging or atypical insurance risks, in particular through:
· The publication ofscientific studies in actuarial matters;
· The development of innovative digital tools to model new risks;
· The training of employees in the sector in new actuarial techniques.
Beyond academic research, the initiative aims to become a space for exchanges, communication and the dissemination of knowledge. As such, scientific seminars open to all will be organized, involving:
· Academics, researchers, teacher-researchers;
· Associate professors, doctoral students and post-doctoral fellows;
· Regulator representatives;
· Professionals and experts in the insurance world;
· And general public.
The research initiative focuses on modeling insurance risks that are new or difficult to assess because they are subject to high uncertainty. A concrete example: climate risks and the difficulty in anticipating extreme events that lead to serious claims in home insurance (HRM).
“Climate issues will be at the heart of the research initiative projects for the period 2025-2028. The objective is to develop actuarial methodologies in order to better take into account the uncertainty associated with climate events and to better anticipate claims, especially in homes. This is a key challenge in building the insurance of tomorrow.”
What is What is a research initiative?
Research initiatives are inter-institutional research projects that contribute to the aggregation of strengths around high-level scientific and technological issues and are developed in conjunction with existing projects. They make it possible to multiply knowledge and know-how.
